Realizing you aren't as young as you used to be

Have you ever had one of those days where you just don't feel like you're the Hip mom you thought you were? Or you feel like what happened to the good old days? That was me today. We had a patient come in with a small laceration above their eye.  (we'll just call him kid here) All of about 15 years old. Really nice, down to earth kid. I'm cleaning out the wound and trying to decide if stitches will be needed. Kid is on said cell phone just chitty chatting it up. Kid puts away phone and proceed to discuss the coolness in the world today. Here's a bit of the conversation. We'll see if you can follow...

"So mom today, so and so(friends of kid) got really upset because that person called her EMO. Mom just sitting there listening and smiling.  Kid again "She was so mad because she's all like I'm not EMO I'm a Sense.  I don't cut. I'm just smiling acting like I even have 1/2 a clue WTH is being said here? For the record, I have NO idea what a sense is? My guess is it's not EMO which is my version of PUNK! And I'm guessing EMo is part goth and a cutter?
Kid looks at me and said you know what I mean right? My response,  "Oh, yea. I totally know what you mean."  Then Kid starts talking about a some band named Fire Party, and how EMO they are." And, I responded with EMO I think that band is punk. Kid says, What do you mean Punk?  I think all these kids today trying to be Punk like the Ramones or the Sex Pistols from my time who are just that. Trying to be what we already did." Kids response, "WHO?" "Is that an oldies band?"  What year was that like 1970? I laughed and said, "no, that was actually the 80's I was only 5. But thanks for aging me like that.
This all made me realize, I'm not as cool as I once was.

I will be 27 next month and it's hitting me hard. I know some may laugh at the fact that I'm still in my 20's, saying I feel old - but it's true. The teenage generation is so different than when I was there. I don't have a clue what they are talking about! And I am getting crows feet. Sheesh :)
